Jet Black Ram Cichlid (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi var. “Jet Black”) - Tank Bred

Jet Black Ram Cichlid (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi var. “Jet Black”) - Tank Bred

For the safety of our animals, we now ship live fish exclusively via UPS Next Day Air. If your order contains this item, you will only see UPS Next Day Air as a shipping option during checkout.

The Jet Black Ram Cichlid is a selectively bred variant of the classic German Blue Ram, developed through controlled crosses between Electric Blue Rams and Black Rams to achieve its deep, velvety coloration. This variety is bred in the United States and acclimated to aquarium life, offering improved consistency and reliability compared to wild-caught specimens.

As with all variant-bred forms, the “Jet Black” designation reflects selective breeding rather than a naturally occurring population. While its appearance is strikingly modern, its behavior, care requirements, and temperament remain true to Mikrogeophagus ramirezi.

Jet Black Rams are calm, observant fish that establish gentle territories rather than aggressive boundaries. In a thoughtfully designed aquarium, they feel less like a centerpiece and more like a deliberate, living part of the aquascape.

What We Love About This Fish

  • Deep jet-black coloration with subtle iridescent highlights

  • Calm, intelligent behavior without excessive aggression

  • A refined dwarf cichlid for peaceful community aquariums

  • Bred in the USA for consistency, adaptability, and hardiness

Natural Habitat

The original Ram Cichlid (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) was first documented in the warm, slow-moving waters of the Orinoco River basin in South America. These environments feature soft substrates, dense marginal vegetation, and gentle flow.

The Jet Black Ram, however, is a selectively bred variant developed in captivity. While it does not occur in the wild, it retains the same environmental preferences and care requirements as the wild-type species.

Aquascaping

  • Plants: Broad-leaved and fine-leaved plants such as Cryptocoryne, Anubias, Java Fern, and Amazon Sword provide cover and comfort.

  • Hardscape: Smooth stones, driftwood, and low-profile caves help define gentle territories.

  • Botanicals: Indian Almond Leaves or alder cones can be added for visual warmth and mild tannins.

Diet and Feeding

Jet Black Rams are omnivorous and benefit from a varied diet. Offer high-quality micro pellets or flakes as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms. Feed small portions once or twice daily to maintain health and coloration.

Tank Mates and Compatibility

Jet Black Rams are best kept with peaceful, similarly sized fish. Suitable tank mates include small tetras, rasboras, peaceful catfish, and other calm community species. Avoid aggressive cichlids or fast, boisterous fish that may cause stress or competition.

Shrimp Compatibility

Adult shrimp are generally safe in a heavily planted aquarium. Very small shrimp or freshly hatched fry may be viewed as food. Dense planting and hardscape provide essential refuge.

Breeding Notes

Breeding in Home Aquariums: Possible but common

Jet Black Rams may form pairs and display classic ram cichlid breeding behaviors, including site cleaning and egg guarding. Successful breeding typically requires stable, warm water conditions and a low-stress environment. Results vary depending on pair compatibility and tank setup.

Recommended Tank Parameters

  • Temperature: 78–84°F (26–29°C)
